With pedicure season upon us, everyone is looking at their feet with new interest. Most of us have had them hidden for a season or two and are contemplating bringing out the sandals and airing things out. We want to showcase our feet in the beautiful sandals that we have bought for the season or the great finds that we have stashed from past years.
But pedicures aren’t just about the polish.
Your feet and their health will greatly affect your life at every age. Calluses can get overgrown, crack and cause great pressure and pain on a variety of areas of the feet not limited to the heels. Corns, which are simply calluses that are focused to a pinpointed area, can develop between the toes, on top of the toes or even on the soles of the feet and cause a lot of discomfort.
But calluses play an important role. They develop in order to protect the foot from friction and pressure and save you from pain. Most of us find them unsightly and want them completely eliminated, but this is not particularly a good idea. Yes, we should keep them from building up and causing excessive pressure, cracking or splitting the skin, causing fissures and pain. But the ideal is to leave enough protection while smoothing them out and minimizing the buildup.
Regular pedicures, even through the winter can keep calluses in check. A professional pedicure often includes a foot and leg massage which helps with achy muscles and helps with circulation and elimination of toxins. Additionally a pedicure might offer exfoliation of the legs and feet, helping to rid dehydrated dead skin.
Paraffin wax dips are also a great add on. They are typically done after a massage and help to penetrate the active ingredients used in the massage cream, deeper into the skin where it can really be of benefit. The heat from the paraffin itself increases blood flow and moisture to the skin leaving your feet looking and feeling amazing.
There is nothing nicer looking than freshly polished toe nails!!! There are many tolulene and formaldahyde free polishes that are safe for health. They come in so many choices of colour now, it could be a problem deciding just which one you want. Why not have them professionally polished. Toe nail polish will usually last about a month. The polish grows out with the toenail, unless of course you stub your toe and chip the polish, and toenails grow so slowly that you really get your money's worth out of a pedicure.
Remember your feet help to support your entire body and get you around for a lifetime. It seems a wise thing to do to protect and care for them.
Your feet will thank you..
